Cataract Surgery Complications

Cataract surgery complications

Don't worry! Studies are showing that even the most serious cataract surgery complications can be fixed with follow up treatments. If your health is good you have no problem with complications. The complications are very rare if your immune system is good.

A frequent cataract surgery complication is the glaucoma or a pressure in the eye which is also called intraocular pressure. If the pressure is very high you need treatment like eye drops, pills, or a laser intervention or even another operation. Another cataract surgery complication which is also very rare is that of your intarocular lens which may need another position in the eye or worse you will need to replace them through another eye operation.

Secondary cataract

The secondary cataract is a complication that requires a laser capsulotomy intervention. This intervention is painless. With the help of the laser capsulotomy, the doctor will create a tiny hole in the membrane to permit the light to get through. These cataract surgery complications are however more common. You may experience some risks in developing and isolated retina.

Endophthalmitis

Endophthalmitis is an inflammation in the eye, which can be caused by an infection after the eye operation. These cataract surgery complications are very rare.

Endophthalmitis symptoms

Endophthalmitis symptoms are: light sensitivity, a pain in the eye, a red eye and the loss of the vision. These kind of cataract surgery complications can be very serious. Endophthalmitis may lead to a permanent loss of vision, or in other words you can become completely blind. But as we discussed previously this type of cataract surgery complication is very rare. Studies are showing that this cataract surgery complication happens one at a thousand cataract operations. This complication can be seen usually at patients with the immune system compromised, or at patients who suffer from diabetes.

The isolated retina

The leaking is a condition that can occur when the liquid drains through a tear in the retina. The drain causes the retina to detach from the back of the eye.

The symptoms of the detached retina are flashes of light or dark stains in the area sight. These symptoms appear after the cataract surgery. And if you have these symptoms you should contact an eye specialist immediately. Also as a symptom for cataract surgery complications is the shadow that moves across of all field of sight. If you experience this symptom address your doctor immediately. The cystoid macula edema is a blurred vision in the central area due to a bump in the layer of the nerve cells, which covers all the part of the eye, which is named retina.

As time passes after the cataract operation if the patient is starting to notice that his/hers vision is blurred he should contact his/her doctor for some tests to be done, as ocular tomography, for stating the extent of the bump. This can be treated through eye drops (anti inflammatory) or steroids injections.

The complications of surgery include retinal detachment, macular cistoid degeneration, bullous keratopathy, choroidal hemorrhage (bleeding beneath the retina that causes the expulsion of the intraocular content by incision) endophthalmitis (infection inside the eye), posterior capsular clouding (treated with laser) and glaucoma. You can experience different complications from easy to difficult, and the only causes are the surgical interventions. Live a healthy life, so as in case of cataract surgery you don't have to experience later these kind of complications.
