Before the cataract surgery procedure

You may be asked not to drink or eat anything at breakfast, before the cataract surgery procedure, of course this depends of the time your cataract procedure is scheduled. You are also forbidden to wear makeup on the procedure day. Before the cataract surgery procedure you will be put eye drops for your pupils to dilate and a sedative to make you feel relaxed.

In the course of cataract surgery procedure.

A local anesthesia will make you feel nothing in the course of the procedure. Your eye skin will be cleaned and some sterile bandages will cover the area around your eye and head. The procedure will take place under a microscope, and one little incision will be made in the eye. The doctor will remove the cataract which means the blurred lens, out of your eye. This procedure is called phacoemulsification (the using of an ultrasound instrument that removes the cataract).

Another cataract surgery procedure is the using of some special instruments that will mechanically smach the blurred lens into little pieces. This procedure is called phacofracture (removes the blurred lens from the eye through an incision).

The specialist will insert an artificial lens from plastic or silicone into the eye. In this way is replaced the natural lens that has been removed. The procedure lasts to 15 minutes. Of course this depends on the complexity of every cataract surgery procedure. You need to stay in the hospital for 3 or 4 hours. You will need to be accompanied, because you will be unable to drive.

After the cataract surgery procedure

After the procedure is over, you need to rest for a while and drink some sodas, preferable natural sodas. If the surgeon saw you and assured himself that you are alright you can go home. You will receive some antibiotics, anti inflammatory eye drops for applying them at home. For a few days your sight will be slightly cloudy until your eye heals. Don't be scared if you feel some discomfort. It is normal until your eye settles. There should be no pain. If you take paracetamol your discomfort should go away.

After few days you will start to see some improvement in your sight. Two weeks later you will have to see the doctor again. After four weeks visit your optometrist for some view glasses. You can return fast to your daily activities, although you should avoid physical exercises like heavy lifting for about a week. The eye which has suffered the cataract surgery procedure needs some time to adjust with the other eye, especially if the other eye suffers from the same disease. You should ask your specialist when you can start to drive again.

Immediately after you received your new glasses, you will shortly notice that your vision improved, and that you can see everything a lot more brighter than before.
